A lot of gutters in Sonoma County are older than some of the people living under them. Steel gutters from decades back rust through at the seams, early vinyl turns brittle and cracks in the sun, and aluminum that's been patched every winter eventually pulls loose from boards that stayed wet too long. In Petaluma, where plenty of older homes still carry their first set of gutters, it's common to find runs held up by a mix of original spikes, newer screws and a little hope. Replacement means taking the whole system down, checking and fixing the wood it hangs from, and putting up new seamless gutters sized to the roof. It's a bigger job than a repair, but it resets the clock on every joint, hanger and downspout at once.

Here's how to tell replacing beats repairing, why old gutters give out, what a replacement day looks like and how fire and storm damage changes the picture. Got just one bad corner or one loose run? Our gutter repair page is the place to start. A good repair can buy a few more seasons, and we'll tell you honestly when that's the smarter move. Both kinds of visit come with a free estimate.

Signs the Whole System Is Done

One leaky corner is a repair. It's time to replace the whole system when the problems are everywhere: rust holes along the bottom of steel gutters, seams that drip again after every fix, runs that sag between hangers, or gutters that have pulled an inch or more away from the fascia. Cracked or chalky vinyl is another giveaway, since it gets brittle with age and sun and splits when a ladder touches it. So is the wrong size. If water shoots over the gutter in a heavy rain even when it's clean, the gutter is too small for the roof, and no repair will change that. Two or three of these on one house usually means new gutters will cost less than chasing leaks every winter.

Spikes, Seams and Sizing: Why Older Gutters Fail

Most older gutters were hung with spikes and ferrules: a long nail driven through the front of the gutter, through a metal sleeve and into the fascia. Every time the gutter fills with water and wet leaves, that spike gets pulled a little, and after enough winters it backs out and the gutter sags. New seamless gutters hang on hidden hangers that screw into the fascia and clip inside the gutter lip, so the load is spread out and nothing works loose the same way. Seams are the other weak point. Sectional gutters rely on sealant at every joint, and that sealant has a shelf life. Then there's size. Many older homes got narrow gutters that can't handle the runoff from a big roof in a hard storm. Going up one size during a replacement is often the single biggest improvement.

How a Replacement Job Goes

We start by taking the old gutters, hangers and downspouts off the house and loading them in the truck. With the gutters down, the fascia boards are exposed, so this is when we check them for soft spots, rot and old nail holes. Anything that needs work gets shown to you before we fix it or price it. Some homes also need a strip of drip edge along the roof so water drops into the gutter instead of running down behind it. Then the new seamless gutters get formed on site, hung on hidden hangers, sloped toward the outlets and connected to new downspouts. Most replacements in Rohnert Park and neighborhoods like it are done in a day. Houses that need a lot of fascia work can take two, and you'll know that before we start.

Gutters Damaged by Fire, Heat or Falling Limbs

Sonoma County homeowners have more reasons than most to replace gutters all at once. A fire that never reached the house can still throw enough radiant heat to warp vinyl gutters and leave aluminum ones bent or discolored. Anyone who lived through the Tubbs or Glass fire knows how close that heat can get. Winter storms bring their own damage, too: a falling oak limb or a heavy redwood branch can crush a run or tear it right off the fascia. When that happens, we photograph the damage before anything comes down and write up an estimate you can hand to your insurance adjuster. Replacement gutters after a fire should be metal, since vinyl softens and warps in high heat.

If you're replacing gutters anyway, the metals, widths and prices are laid out on our seamless gutter installation page.

Common Questions

A little, because of the extra work. Before the new gutters go up, the old ones, the hangers and the downspouts have to come off and get hauled away, and the fascia behind them often needs some repair. On a straightforward house that adds a modest amount to the per-foot price. Rotted boards are the wild card, which is why we check them with the gutters down and show you before adding anything to the bill.

Usually, yes. Old downspouts are often dented, crushed at the elbows or packed with years of debris, and they're sized for the old gutter outlets. Putting new gutters on old downspouts tends to move the problem down the wall instead of fixing it. If your downspouts are in good shape and line up with the new outlets, we can keep them. We'll also look at whether the house needs them moved.

We take them with us. Old aluminum, steel and copper gutters usually go to scrap metal recycling, and the hangers, spikes and debris get picked up off the yard and roof before we leave. You won't be left with a pile of bent gutter by the side of the house. If you'd like to keep old copper gutters for any reason, tell us ahead of time and we'll set them aside for you.
