Every gallon a gutter catches has to leave through a downspout, and where that downspout ends decides whether the water helps or hurts. A downspout that empties straight onto the soil next to the house sends roof water right back toward the foundation. On the heavy clay soil common around Santa Rosa, that water doesn't soak in fast, so it sits against the footing, finds its way into the crawl space and feeds mold, musty smells and settling. Downspouts that are too small or too few back up during heavy rain, and the gutter overflows even when it's clean. Fixing that usually doesn't take a big project. Moving a downspout, adding another, upsizing it or extending the outlet a few feet often solves water problems people have lived with for years.

Below we explain how to tell where your roof water is really going, how downspout size and placement work, how we fix a drainage problem and what clay soil means for your crawl space. If the gutters themselves are overflowing, start with our gutter repair page. We stick to downspouts, extensions and tie-ins to drains you already have, and we'll say so plainly if a yard needs regrading or landscape drainage instead.

Where the Water Is Really Going

The best way to check your downspouts is to watch them in a real storm. Water should leave each outlet in a steady stream and land well away from the house. Trouble looks like puddles that form against the wall, mulch or soil washed away below a downspout outlet, water bubbling up from a buried pipe, or a downspout that's dry while the gutter above it overflows. Other clues show up between storms: efflorescence, the white powdery crust on concrete, along the foundation; a crawl space that smells musty or feels damp; cracks in a walkway or patio right where a downspout empties. If any of these show up near the same downspout, that's where to start. Downspouts hidden behind shrubs are worth a look, since that's often where the worst puddles form.

Downspout Sizes, Shapes and How Many You Need

Most homes have 2x3-inch downspouts, which work for smaller roofs. Larger 3x4-inch downspouts move far more water and clog less often, so they're the better choice on big roof sections, under trees or anywhere gutters overflow in heavy rain. Round downspouts suit half-round gutters on older or historic homes, while rectangular ones match the K-style gutters on most houses. A common rule is to add a downspout once a gutter run gets past about 35 to 40 feet, but roof area and pitch matter more than length. A long run that drains into a single corner downspout is a common reason gutters overflow in the middle. Adding a second outlet often fixes it for good. Downspouts also have to line up with the outlet holes cut in the gutter, which is why moving one usually means a new outlet.

How We Fix a Drainage Problem

We start by walking the house in the rain or running water through the gutters to see where each downspout sends its water. Then we decide what to change. Sometimes it's moving an outlet away from a patio or walkway, sometimes it's adding an outlet halfway along a long run, and sometimes it's swapping undersized downspouts for 3x4-inch ones. At the bottom, we add an extension, a splash block or a tie-in to an existing drain line so the water lands at least a few feet from the foundation. If a buried pipe is clogged or crushed, we'll tell you before we connect anything to it. Extensions can be the fixed kind or the flip-up kind that swings out of the way when you mow. Most downspout jobs take a few hours.

Clay Soil, Crawl Spaces and Winter Runoff

A lot of the flat ground between Santa Rosa and Petaluma sits on dense clay soil. Clay swells when it's wet and drains slowly, so water dumped by a downspout can sit in the ground for days. Over a long wet winter, that keeps the ground along the foundation saturated, which is how crawl spaces end up damp and floors start to feel soft or uneven. Moving roof water far from the house is the simplest way to protect the foundation. It also keeps water off walkways and patios, where clay underneath can heave and crack the concrete. On clay lots, we often recommend longer extensions or a tie-in to an existing drain that carries the water to the street or a lower part of the yard.

Downspouts only work when the gutters above them drain, so pair this with new seamless gutter installation if your current gutters are too far gone.

Common Questions

Start at the top. Most clogs begin with leaves and needles washing into the gutter outlet, so keeping the gutters clean or covered does most of the work. Larger 3x4-inch downspouts clog far less than 2x3 ones. A simple screen or strainer over the outlet helps on gutters without guards. If a downspout does clog, it's usually at the bottom elbow, where debris gets stuck in the bend. Flushing it with a hose from the top a couple of times a year keeps it running.

It can, as long as the driveway slopes away from the house and the runoff has a place to drain, like the street or a lawn. The risks are ice on cold mornings, slick moss in shady spots and water that runs back toward the garage. Downspouts that dump onto walkways or patios are worse, since people walk through the water and the concrete stains. We'll look at the slope and suggest the safest place for each downspout to empty.

Yes. A diverter on the downspout can send water into a rain barrel and let the overflow continue down the downspout once the barrel is full. That's a good setup for watering a garden during the dry season. Keep in mind that a single storm here can fill a barrel quickly, so the overflow still needs a safe path away from the foundation. If you have a barrel or plan to buy one, we can install the diverter at the same visit.
